WWE changes name of women's Mania event

After receiving fierce backlash over their decision to name an event after the Fabulous Moolah, executives at WWE have decided to reverse course and change the name to the WrestleMania Women's Battle Royal.

WWE released a video package during RAW promoting a battle royal named for former women's wrestler Mary Lillian Ellison (Fabuous Moolah). The segment portrayed her as an icon and trailblazer for women's wrestling but it was met with instant pushback from some of her former students and the public as being dishonest. The change of heart comes just after WrestleMania sponsor Mars Wrigley, whose Snicker's will be the title sponsor for the April mega-show, also weighed in, releasing the following statement on Thursday:

"We were recently made aware of the World Wrestling Entertainment Inc’s (WWE) decision to honor a former wrestler during the upcoming WrestleMania 34 event. As a principle-based business that has long championed creating inclusive environments that encourage and empower everyone to reach their full potential, this is unacceptable. We are engaging with the WWE to express our disappointment."
